Why rereading can feel better than it works

When the explanation is visible, it is easy to recognise the idea and mistake that feeling for mastery. Retrieval practice removes the prompt. The useful question becomes: can you reconstruct the idea when the answer is not in front of you?

Research has found that practising retrieval can support meaningful learning and longer-term retention. That does not mean every study session should become a barrage of quizzes. The effort should appear at the right point and test something worth remembering.
